Roulette's Inside Bets

Inside bets in roulette are gambles on specific numbers up to six at once. There are six types of insides bets; split, street, corner, five numbers and six numbers. It is important to place the bets correctly, since it is all too easy and confusing to place your bets on the wrong slot. The payouts on inside bets are higher than the payouts on the outside bets, because the probability of the player winning the bet is lower.

Straight up bet - This is when you bet on a single number to come up. While the odds of your winning a straight bet are unbelievably low, 37 to 1, it is also the bet which has the best payout, 35 to 1. Hence, a straight bet of five dollars can pay out $175 dollars.

Split bet - which consists of betting on two numbers on the layout. They need not be consecutive. All you have to do is simply place the chip on the line separating the two numbers, and you win if any of the two numbers that you have chosen comes up. The payout on this bet is 17 to 1, since playing two numbers double your probability of winning.

Street bet - which is similar to the split bet, only that in this case you are betting on three numbers at once. In order to make a street bet you must place your chip outside the row of numbers on which you wish to bet. The probability of winning a street bet is three times that of winning a straight bet, hence the payout is 11 to 1.

Corner bet - The corner bet is on four numbers at once, and you win if any of the four comes up. The payout on this kind of bet is 8 to 1.

Five number bet - This kind of bet covers the numbers 0, 00, 1, 2 and 3. this is the only bet on the layout that covers five numbers at once, and most experts do not recommend this bet, because of the discouragingly high house edge, which is usually 5.26%, but shoots up to 7 percent on this bet. The payout on a five number is 6 to 1.

Six number bet - It covers two rows of three consecutive numbers. When you wish to play a six number bet, then you place your chip on the outside line so that it touches the line between the two rows that you wish to bet on. Here it is especially important to be accurate in the placement of the chips. If you do not place them on the outside line between the two rows, then you are actually placing a split or corner bet. If any of the six numbers that you chose comes up, then you are paid 5 to 1.
